Congratulations to Professor Julian Paton on being awarded the Gluckman Medal

We are proud to announce that Pūtahi Manawa Co-Director, Professor Julian Paton, has received the prestigious Gluckman Medal for his contributions to heart research.

The Gluckman Medal is the University of Auckland’s premier medical research award and recognises Professor Paton's outstanding sustained research contributions in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (FMHS).

Professor Paton's leadership was instrumental in forming Manaaki Manawa, the Faculty’s Centre for Heart Research, and attracting funding for the establishment of our national Centre of Research Excellence, Pūtahi Manawa, in 2021.

Professor Paton’s heart research has contributed to a better understanding of heart disease and, more recently, managing it, with the development and testing of an innovative pacemaker that aims to reverse the process of heart failure. His research is groundbreaking, award-winning and world-class.

Among his many academic and research achievements, Professor Paton has supervised 26 PhD students, published more than 440 publications and has over 24,000 citations. Since his appointment to FMHS in 2017, he has received significant research funding including HRC Programme and Marsden grants and became a Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi in 2021. Professor Paton partners with Māori and Pacific peoples across a broad range of heart health stakeholders in Aotearoa, supporting leadership development, and addressing inequities with Māori and Pacific researchers, whānau/aiga and communities.

Professor Paton and his mahi are integral to our mission for heart health equity in Aotearoa New Zealand and we congratulate him on this significant award.
